Finding a Herzing Preceptor Near You

When you search for a preceptor "near me," you are really asking three questions at once: Can I drive there? Will my state and my program accept it? And can I lock it in before Herzing's deadlines? This page answers all three. We are an independent placement service for Herzing University MSN and DNP nurse practitioner students, and we are not Herzing University, the CCNE, or any accreditor. Our job is to put a qualified, Herzing-approvable preceptor in your specialty and your state within reach early, so local stops being a gamble.

Why "near me" actually matters for NP clinicals

For nurse practitioner clinicals, location is not a convenience preference. It changes whether a placement is even usable. You will spend hundreds of clinical hours on site over multiple terms, so a preceptor an hour each way is sustainable and one three hours away usually is not. Students who line up their own nearby sites avoid punishing travel and tend to build stronger, steadier working relationships with their preceptor, which is exactly why local matters.

There are three real constraints behind the words "near me," and a good local match has to satisfy all of them:

  • Drivable. The site has to fit around your life and your other clinical terms without burning you out on the road. Distance is the first thing that quietly sinks a placement.
  • In your state's scope. Where you complete your clinical hours has to line up with the state where you intend to be licensed and with how that state treats NP practice and preceptor supervision. State rules vary by track and change over time, so this is checked against your situation, not assumed.
  • Approvable by your program. Herzing requires that every site and preceptor be Herzing-approved before you set foot in clinical. A preceptor down the street does you no good if their credentials, specialty, or the site agreement will not clear Herzing's review.

Put simply: "near me" is only valuable when the nearby site is also in scope for your state and clearable by Herzing. We work all three at once instead of finding you someone close and hoping the rest works out.

How Herzing's model puts the search on you

Herzing is student-first by design. Students are expressly encouraged to take an active role in identifying and securing their own clinical site and preceptor. You do get real support: a Clinical Placement Advisor for guidance and a master's-prepared Clinical Coordinator for coaching and additional site leads, and if your own outreach comes up empty you can receive a list of Herzing-approved sites as a fallback.

Herzing also stands behind that process with its APRN Clinical Placement Pledge: if, after you complete every required step on time, you still cannot secure a placement, Herzing will step in and secure one for you. That is a genuine placement backstop, and we want to be clear that it is real. It is a placement promise, not a tuition refund or money-back guarantee, and it is conditional. It applies only if you have followed Herzing's Clinical Guidance Process, met every deadline, started the formal placement process early enough, and kept everything to Herzing-approved sites and preceptors. The full conditions live on our clinical placement page, and the timeline that gates it is on clinical deadlines.

The honest gap is this: the primary preceptor-finder is you, and the backstop only catches you after you have done all of it, on time. If your local outreach stalls late, you are exposed. That is the gap we close, by lining up an approvable local preceptor early.

How we find local, approvable sites for you

Our work starts from your state and your specific track, not from a generic national database. We look for clinicians who can actually precept your kind of patients within a sensible drive of you, then pressure-test each lead against what Herzing will require before you ever submit.

  • We match your track to the right preceptor. An FNP needs a family-practice setting; a PMHNP needs a behavioral-health preceptor; acute-care, pediatric, women's health, and adult-gero primary care each need their own match. We target the specialty your program expects. Browse them all under specialties.
  • We screen for approvability up front. We confirm the preceptor's credentials and scope fit your track and gather what Herzing's clinical application calls for, including the preceptor's CV and willingness to sign a preceptor agreement, so the site is positioned to clear Herzing's review rather than bounce.
  • We keep it in your state's lane. We aim placements at sites consistent with where you plan to be licensed, and we flag anything that needs confirming against your track and your state rather than guessing.
  • We move early. Because Herzing's process and its Pledge are deadline-gated, we line up candidates well ahead of your clinical application window so you clear the dates instead of scrambling. See clinical deadlines for the timeline.

We do not name or promise any specific clinic, hospital system, or scheduling system here, because the right local site depends entirely on you. What we commit to is the work of finding and vetting drivable, in-state, Herzing-approvable options for your specialty.

National reach, local placement

Working with NP students across the country is what lets us serve you locally. The wider our network of clinicians and sites, the better the odds that there is a strong, approvable match within driving distance of wherever you are, in a small town or a major metro. Reach is the input; a placement you can actually drive to is the output.

If you want to see how a local match comes together for your track, start at find a preceptor for the step by step, browse your specialty under specialties, or tell us your state and track on the contact page and we will tell you what local options look like for you.

Questions

Good to know

Do you guarantee a preceptor in my exact town?

No one can honestly promise a specific clinic in a specific town, and we will not. What we do is search for qualified, Herzing-approvable preceptors in your specialty within a drivable range of you, screen them for approvability before you apply, and move early so you clear Herzing's deadlines. The goal is a local site you can realistically commit to, not a name on a list.

What counts as "near me" for NP clinicals?

There is no fixed mileage rule, but the practical test is whether you can sustain the commute across hundreds of clinical hours over multiple terms. A site that is drivable for your weekly schedule, in line with your state's licensure plans, and approvable by Herzing is a good local match. One that is close but out of scope or unapprovable is not.

Does my preceptor have to be in the state where I'll be licensed?

Where you complete clinical hours needs to line up with your licensure plans and with how your state treats NP practice and preceptor supervision, and that varies by track and changes over time. We aim placements at sites consistent with where you intend to practice and flag anything that needs confirming against your specific state and program rather than assuming.

Why not just use Herzing's approved-site list near me?

Herzing's fallback list is a real safety net and worth using, but it only comes into play after your own outreach has already stalled, often late in the process. Herzing's model makes you the primary preceptor-finder, and its Placement Pledge only steps in once you have completed every step on time. We line up an approvable local preceptor early so you are not depending on a conditional, deadline-gated backstop.

Are you part of Herzing University?

No. We are an independent clinical-placement service for Herzing MSN and DNP nurse practitioner students.
